Terminology

  • Bleed - Is where an image or colour has to extend past the trimmed area of the document to ensure that the image or colour extends right to the edge of the trimmed page.
  • Carbonless - Often referred to as NCR (No carbon required) is a form of paper used in docket books where what is written carries from the first through to the last page of the NCR set.
  • CMYK - Colour Scheme used in printing, stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. Black is represented by the K as it is the Key colour. Otherwise known as process colours, these colour are used in printing to create full colour images.
  • Cropping - Is where an area within a photo is selected and the size of the photo then becomes trimmed to that selection. Used to extract extraneous image area not needed within a photo.
  • Digital Printing - Using the latest in Digital Printing clients are able to have short run printing done to an excellent standard and at greatly reduced prices. Machines such as XEROX Digital Printers have come a long way and produce vibrant colours on a wide range of stocks.
  • Die Cutting - This is where the finished piece of paper is cut to a specific shape, this may often be so that the shape of the paper follows the outline of an image that has been printed on the paper.
  • Digital Proof - This form of proofing is used to represent what the client will receive once the job is printed on the printing press. The proof is printed out usually on a large format inkjet printer where the colours have been colour matched to best represent those printed on the press. 
  • FTP Acronym for File Transfer Protocol a method of transferring usually large files between computers that are connected to the internet.
  • GIF - A low resolution bitmap file (graphical interchange format) not usually suitable for the printing.
  • Gigabyte 1000 megabytes
  • JPEG A bitmap file format that is acceptable for printing use so long as the file itself is high enough quality
  • Landscape - Think panoramic view, this is where the width of the layout or page is greater than the height.
  • Megabyte - 1 million bytes of information
  • Offset - Printing process where by the image is transferred from plate to paper via a rubber blanket placed over a steel roller on the press.
  • PMS - Pantone Matching System is a printing industry standard for specifying, creating and matching your colours
  • Process Printing - using the CYMK colours (process colours) to create a full colour image
  • Trim marks - placed on the artwork to indicate where the document will be trimmed to.
